Seagate ST3300831A 300GB Data Recovery Case Study

A web designer in Staffordshire, UK, contacted the firm regarding a Seagate data recovery service, this was collected via the free courier collection offered by Data Recovery England.

Here is the case study of the Seagate ST3300831A hard drive:

This hard drive was enclosed in an external housing or caddy for ease of data access and portability, the client informs the engineers that the drive was dropped on the floor some 2 years prior to involvement and was stored away, waiting for the time of need for the data. Subsequently, the drive was shipped to this lab for expert analysis and recovery.

Diagnosis:

The disk, when powered made a dull sound, the engineers believed that the spindle had seized solid, this is the part that spins the magnetic media at a rate of 7,000 times per minute, without this spinning the drive is not accessible. The only way to get the data recovered for this client was to cary out a platter transplant into a working new drive to recover the files. Engineers began work on the drive and placed the platters rotationally aligned into the drive and began to image the drive to a reliable disk.

Spec of this Seagate ST3300831A hard disk drive:

Manufactured March 2005

What was the outcome?

A week went by to allow the drive to image, as it was extremely damaged, however, after this process a total of 130GB of extremely valuable video files were recovered, the data was returned back on a new Western Digital 1TB disk and the process took 9 days, excellent work from the team!
